The basic ambition of the Konvikt Resident cycle, which originated last year, is to create an original design for the Konvikt building. The chosen author will obtain financial and material sources to realize his artistic intention.
The important feature of the "Konvikt Resident" is an explicit harmony with the festival dramaturgy and the Konvikt area. This year, we addressed several artists with one condition: their spacial design should concern images split on several screens, which would directly relate to the principle of polyekran which is the central theme of the Live Animation cycle. The artistic couple – the residents – gig as duo Anymade and even made the festival trailer.
Ondřej Vavrečka, an experimental film maker from Prague, chose as his "residency place" the former Jewish chapel, nowadays already deconsecrated Boží Tělo Chapel which usually provides a place for concerts and lectures. The first two festival days offer his short film called Lípa třetího tisíciletí (A Lime-tree of the New Millenium) which a variation of classic multiscreen, shot on 16mm reel and projected by three projectors. Vavrečka obtained the major part of the material on his way to a Polish village Wambierzyce nicknamed as the Silesian Jerusalem. This pilgrims' destination is really fabulous, one legend tells about the lime-tree standing by a statue of Mother of God, where the blind Jan z Raszewa was cured. Vavrečka comments on his project: "How could one talk about a film's background? .. a body came out of Golgoth into the campus chapel, projected on three screens which stand right in front of the audience. And what about the wood? There was the Holy Virgin on it, and just before it decayed they moved it to the basilica. Everything is german in there. Polish Sudetenland. They've just concreted the stairs leading to her. I haven't seen the twelve stairs through my videocamera. Perhaps they'll have it revealed tomorrow. Some kids came to the stairs. The soul is a jet. A hope form the heaven."
The four authors Filip Cenek, Petr Cabalka, Filip Nerad and Jan Šrámek come from different generations of students of FaVu in Brno, which is rather a marginal link, but remains as one of the most important features that managed to define Brno's typical visual style. They create their artistic and designer work within the Fiume and Anymade unions which also cover some other authors.
There will be three individual installations around the Konvikt Attic, which should fulfil the "transport function" – the way the visitors approach the auditoriums, theatre, accreditation offi ce or toilets – the restraint of the fl ow of visitors will have the effect of compressing the place into the stream of an opiate atmosphere. The installations will not only present the image, but also expand it through video-screening, stereopticon and even objects. Thus, the polyekran theme is visible even through the title of this exhibition = Anymade. It refers to the artistic union itself and also to the creatively deformed comprehension of the name of the festival – PAF.
