HIGHLY VALUED CONTEMPORARY FILMS

Screenings of the chosen films that employ pixilation technique and were appreciated at several film festivals.
As the title of the block suggests, the chosen screenings present the best of contemporary pixilation animation. Nowadays, there have been several attempts to use pixilation in both full feature and animation fi lms. There is considerable difference between contemporary pixilation production and that of the 60s and 70s. While the latter extracted much of McLaren's enthusiasm and tried to seem as original and extravagant as possible, the former is characteristic of thematic and generic versatility. The sixties experienced many pixilation sketches and jokes built on the comedy of pixilation, which were only used to support full feature staged films.
Today, there are many fi lms which employ pixilation on very different levels. Pixilation is often used to distinguish between two diverse backgrounds: reality and fi ction, the normal and the abnormal. Further uses are estrangement and the evoking of a terrifying or depressing atmosphere through its shivering dynamics. One should also mention the dominant position of pixilation animation within the music video genre. In general every director comes with his / her own unique approach and thus shifts the limits (supposedly mastering the technique) of pixilations even further. The choice of fi lms is not limited to a country, nor a continent. Our aim is to familiarize you with several creative procedures, to show you several combinations of pixilation and other techniques and provide you with an insight into the limitless possibilities and variety of pixilation.
