2009
The eighth year of the Festival of Film Animation took place from the 10th to 13th December of 2009 in the Art Centre of Palacký University, Metropol Cinema, Gallery "U Mluka" and Metro, Mitril and Vertigo clubs.
Non-fiction: The main thematic section of this year's PAF, within which the audience had an opportunity to consider the relation of animation to reality. The non-fiction animated cinematography was cross-sectionally introduced within several blocks; one series of films was dedicated to Czechoslovak emigrant Paul Fierlinger (e.g. films Drawn from Memory and Still Life with Animated Dogs). A significant guest of PAF, who introduced his work within the Non-fiction animation, was the Austrian audio visual artist and experimentalist Martin Arnold. The crowded halls were fascinated by (de)animation of classical Hollywood movies, when Arnold revealed implied sense and meaning by means of editing and digital technologies.
Croatian Animation: The country, whose production was comprehensively examined at PAF 2009, was Croatia. This national animation proved that it is able to hold up under comparison with international competition and that it in most cases manages even without words. The audience had an opportunity to watch dozens of short animated films concerning both classical animation represented by so called Zagreb School and the contemporary modern animation tending rather to digital technologies. Besides previous production of animating studios Kenges and Bonobo, Simon Bogojević Narath introduced several projects in process. Darko Bakliža, whose films were presented retrospectively, personally introduced The New Horizons of Zagreb Film.
The Croatian director, pedagogue, performer, renaissance artist and gardener Ivan Ladislav Galeta became PAF Cult and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Cinematography.
Konvikt Resident: Thanks to this section, a chipboard shed, so called Black Box was built in Atrium of the Art Centre of Palacký University. In Black Box, the audience had an opportunity to watch audio visual work by Ken Jacobs, who visited this year's PAF at least through conference call. White Burrow Theatre then changed into BLACK BOX and its dark basement and flashing screen invited to watch Martin Arnold's audio visual work Deanimated: The Invisible Ghost.
Díky sekci Konvikt Resident vyrostla v Atriu UC UP Konvikt dřevotřísková bouda, tzv. Black Box, v níž mohli diváci po celou dobu PAFu vidět audiovizuální díla Kena Jacobse, který letošní PAF navštívil alespoň prostřednictvím telefonické konference. Divadlo Bílá nora se pak na PAFu v BLACK BOX proměnilo celé a jeho tmavé sklepní prostory s blikajícím plátnem zvaly ke zhlédnutí audiovizuálního díla Martina Arnolda Deanimated: The Invisible Ghost.
Besides Black Boxes, the Art Centre of Palacký University was during PAF made special also by Martin Blažíček's installation Swing (1) and by screening of films selected for Other Vision competition installed in the attic of Konvikt.
Other Visions competition Section: There were several awarded artists during 2009. The international Jury consisted of Mia Makela, Ivan Ladislav Galeta and Martin Arnold. The Jury awarded Daniel Pitín (Lost Architect) and the Audience Award went to Matěj Smetana (Instructions 2: Trilobite). Each member of Jury then announced his/her own personal favourite whom they sent a special award:

Live Animation: Hand(made) Soft(ware) Section offered a rich programme. The Finnish artist Mia Makela aka SOLU familiarized the audience with live animation both theoretically at the lecture on Live Cinema (live animation practice) and practically during her audio visual performance Kaamos. PAF was also visited by many local progressive artists whose production is specific by diffusion of image and sound in real time. This year, the theatre hall of Art Centre of Palacký University was occupied by Pjoni & Ink Midget & tvprodukt (Jonatán Pastirčák, Adam Matěj and Jakub Němeček) and 1A2V1 (Jaroslav Hárovník and Jan Šrámek); Like She band (Pavla Malinová, Jan Vytiska, Pavel Ptáčník) make the audience dance in Mitril club and Kazety formation (Johana Švarcová, Jiří Havlíček, David Doubek) followed. The performance by Pure B & TOY_BOX created especially for PAF provided the spectators with punk comics screened in real time without using a computer, using only two cameras and a machine constructed especially for these purposes.
PAF Rewind: This section familiarized the spectators with Motion Capture technology, which is being used in amusement industry, military as well as medicine. Pavel Hruboš gave a lecture on its influence of animated film. Zdeněk Svoboda, an expert at biomechanics, Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University Olomouc, introduced Motion Capture technology by means of workshop within which the audience had a unique opportunity to "touch" the technology in practice.
Aport Animation: Newly emerged section aims to introduce projects interconnected with animation at the stage of its emergence, and to present the related festivals, hybrid forms of animation and new projects of the filmmakers, who attended PAF in the past. Within the framework of the section TOY BOX's exhibition Two Cups of Tea took place in Gallery "U Mloka", there was a presentation of Michal Pěchouček's DVD, the Polish animator Anna Pankiewicz's emerging Polish-Czech project and the presentation of handmade computer game Machinarium that was at PAF introduced by the musician Floex (Tomáš Dvořák). There was also the Czech premiere of the film The Secret of Kells made in coproduction and that was introduced by Irish director Tomm Moore at last year's PAF.
