INFLUENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANIMATED FILM
In the 1990s, 3D was spoken about by animators in quite a reserved way. Now almost 15 years after the first 3D feature film, we may claim with a clear conscience that all the apprehension of the critics has disappeared.
3D became the new standard for the production of animated films due to new technologies and the animators' skills. The new technology fulfilled all expectations: it helped many a studio to get back on its feet; it often saved time and costs on production and enabled us to produce many more films than was previously possible. The new way to attract families to the cinemas, brought quite a considerable amount of money into the areas of film and the advertising industry but mainly it brought the cult of 3D entertainment.
Nowadays motion capture is being accepted with no less doubt among 3D animators. The technology is relatively young, however, it comes from a long history of the human desire to capture human movement. There is a generally held claim that Motion Capture is only a tool and does not belong to any form of artistic expression. Motion Capture on its own cannot do much and it needs a mover – an actor – for the animation. The lecture will deal with the milestones in the development of this remarkable technology and will focus on the historical chain of events and, last but not least, on the indisputable influence which motion capture has on contemporary film and advertisement.
