Contemporaneity and different motion capture technologies

When they hear "motion capture", what most often comes to the minds of 3D graphic artists is human motion capture for 3D animated CG films such as Shrek, The Polar Express etc. Motion Capture or mocap (MOtion CAPture) is generally more complex and it is a general discipline that involves, not only biometrics, but also virtual reality and industrial applications in general.

It is most obvious in the fields of exploitation where mocap is used today. Its highest use is naturally in the entertainment industry where mocap is used for special effects in films as well as in the game industry, Tv shows, virtual studios, the advertising industry, video clips etc.

Mocap usage is stronger in the branches of medicine and sport, where it is used for the evaluation of rehabilitation procedures, motility examination, and for sportsmen to record the marks of human motion.

The particular meaning of mocap is then in scientific applications where motion capture is used for instance, as an input user's interface for virtual reality (tracking of hands, body or head) or as visual measurement for control of robots' motion (tracking points in the terminal dead centres of machines etc.).

The lecture will contain a presentation of the basic principles, the contemporary state and a look at the near future of highly sophisticated optical motion captures. The centre of attention will be the most advanced system Vicon MX F a MX T of Vicon Company which belongs to the Oxford Metrix Group consortium (OMG) who specializes in the advanced elaboration of pictures. Company 2d3, which produces the software, Boujou as well as GSV, belongs to OMG among others and it is an expert in transport systems (navigation of a car with cameras, recognition of traffic signs, etc.). The theoretical bases will be accompanied by practical demonstrations of work with mocap.
